Striped bass comments needed to ASMFC by October 07.

As we noted last month, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission took action on Atlantic striped bass and approved Draft Addendum VI for public comment.  Draft Addendum VI is available at http://www.asmfc.org/files/PublicInput/StripedBassDraftAddVI_PublicComment_Aug2019.pdf or on the Commission’s website at http://www.asmfc.org/about-us/public-input.

According to ASMFC’s latest press release, “Public comment will be accepted until 5 PM (EST) on October 7, 2019 and should be sent to Max Appelman, Fishery Management Plan Coordinator, 1050 N. Highland St, Suite A-N, Arlington, VA 22201; 703.842.0741 (FAX) or at comments@asmfc.org (Subject line: Striped Bass Draft Addendum VI).

If you are not sure what to say then look no further then the American Saltwater Guides Association’s comments. They have been laser focused on this and their comments are on target.

Here is a summary of the options they support:

  • Option 2 Equal reduction across all sectors.
  • Option 2A-1 One fish limit with a minimum size of 35″.
  • Option 2B-1 One fish limit with and 18″ minimum for the Chesapeake Bay.
  • Option B for mandatory circle hooks for the fishery.

Now is the time to make your position known to the Commission. Take a moment and send your comments, and remember to use the Subject line: Striped Bass Draft Addendum VI.

Feel free to personalize your comments, but below is a sample email:

Subject: Striped Bass Draft Addendum VI
Dear Commissioners,
I urge you to adopt the following options to end over  fishing and rebuild the stock.

I believe these are the most consecutive options, which will address overfishing and rebuild the stock in the most expedient manner.

Thank you for taking my comments into consideration.
